Who we help »
They have started to repair unclaimed and scrap bicycles seized by London's Metropolitan Police, and send them out to HIV orphanages in Gambia, Tanzania and Kenya, and to London-based projects, to make children's lives just a little bit easier.
Overseen by Hackney VPC Zakariya Ahmed, who is AQA qualified in bike maintenance, the group has seen some 160 pedal cycles reworked and redistributed. The Cadets are now taking on various fund-raising projects to help them raise enough money to visit The Gambia later this year. Once there, they will work with the President's International Award Centre, SOS Children's Orphanages, and Nygoema Kindergarten teaching children essential bike maintenance skills that will help them keep their bicycles roadworthy and save hours of tireless walking. They also plan to build a bike shelter to keep the children's bicycles safe.
Through the ACF, Camilla is matching the funds raised by Hackney cadets to help make the Cadets' goal even more achievable.
